COMPLETED PROJECTS

Beginning of Mammography

Funds were used to transport a refurbished mammography machine from the states to Litein. Mammography is crucial because it enables early detection of breast cancer, significantly improving treatment success and survival rates. Mammography is a life-saving service for the community that also helps provide revenue for the hospital.

Chaplaincy Room Remodel

Friends of Litein purchased materials to create walls and a window to make a new office space for the chaplains. They also purchased furnishings for the room as well. The hospital chaplains provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff, helping them navigate the challenges of illness and healthcare. It is important that the chaplain’s office has appropriate furniture for them to work.

Palliative Care Conference

Friends of Litein covered fees incurred by 4 people attending a palliative care conference.

Palliative Care focuses on improving the quality of life for patients facing serious illnesses. It provides relief of symptoms such as pain, fatigue, and anxiety, ensuring that patients can live as fully and comfortably as possible. This holistic approach not only addresses physical symptoms but also considers psychological, spiritual, and social aspects of care. Early delivery of palliative care can lead to fewer hospitalizations. The hospital has a great need to increase their palliative care services.

Family Practice Residency Program

Friends of Litein has helped cover the salaries and medical licenes for two family practice residency faculty.

Family Practice Doctors play a unique role in enhancing primary healthcare and the overall healthcare system in Kenya. The training covers a wide range of medical and surgical disciplines and aims to address the health and wholeness of individuals and communities through compassionate healthcare. This program is essential for developing a skilled and competent workforce in Kenya, capable of addressing diverse health needs of the population.

Laundry Improvements

The hospital laundry has been regularly completed by handwashing it and hanging it to dry. This can become difficult with the large number of blankets that need to be washed.

The hospital built a new laundry facility. FOL funded the purchase of 2 Washing Machines, 2 Dryers, and 1 Ironer. FOL has also funded some of the infrastructure needed for a laundry facility. FOL added poles for the wash lines and put in some water tanks for the laundry.

Laundry is a necessity in a hospital setting. Proper cleaning of linens is important to not spread of disease. Also, in Kenya, using your limited water supply and electricity resources efficiently is very important. Having good lines to hang the wash to dry does not use any electricity. Storing water in tanks helps ensure an adequate water supply during seasons with lower amounts of rain.

Sonography School Support

FOL paid for an Annual Membership in Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and for a sonographer to take a course through World

Education Services. Having well-trained staff is important for the hospital to provide patients care and to teach other staff.

FOL funded some of the construction of the physical building of the hospital’s new sonography school. This school will accept and train 30 new sonographers each year.

ICU Expansion Remodel

FOL funded the purchase of filters, valves, oxygen equipment, curtains, rails, extensions, brushes, pipes, pumps, and controllers to assist setting up an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The primary purpose is to monitor, stabilize, and treat critically ill individuals who require advanced support for their vital functions. The ICU serves as a critical lifeline, offering specialized interventions and round-the-clock care to patients at the highest risk of complications or death.

Endoscopy Equipment Purchase

A gastroscope and a heat probe unit were purchased for the hospital. Endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure that uses a flexible tube with a camera to examine the inside of the body. It provides accurate diagnosis with real-time images of internal organs, allowing healthcare professionals to identify issues such as tumors, ulcers, and inflammation. It is particularly helpful in diagnosing early-stage cancers and infections and providing preventative care of removing polyps or stopping bleeding.

Xray Machine Acquired

The hospital acquired a new digital xray machine. X-Ray machines are vital to provide non-invasive imaging. They are essential for detecting bone fractures, infections, tumors, and other conditions.

Insufflator Purchase

FOL purchased an insufflator and sent it to the hospital.

This device introduces gas into the surgical area site so that the surgeon has a stable environment to work in.

Well Drilled

A well was drilled. Clean water is vital for hydration, hygiene, and wound cleansing, ensuring patients receive necessary care and treatment. Proper water treatment helps prevent the spread of waterborne illnesses and infections, protecting both patients and healthcare workers. Water quality is crucial for the operation of medical equipment and systems, preventing damage and ensuring their effective functioning.

Siemens NX3 Elite Purchase

A helpful new ultrasound machine was purchased and installed. Ultrasound machines are non-invasive and allow viewing of internal organs and soft tissue.

Providing Physical Therapy Equipment

The physical therapist didn’t have any equipment to use with the patients. FOL funded the purchase of 3 gym balls, a hammock and its frame, and a cast cutter. Steps were built to use for therapy sessions.

Physical Therapy is essential for restoring movement, reducing pain, preventing injuries, and improving overall quality of life. Equipment is important for teaching exercises.

Providing Eyeglasses

Friends of Litein acquired glasses to hand out to patients. Glasses are not easy to acquire and patients were so thankful to be able to see again. Some were able to read their Bibles for the first time in a long time.

Pavers and Gates Installation

Gates were installed and the front parking lot was paved this spring. This was done emergently during dry season to eliminate mud from being tracked into the hospital and to allow wheelchairs and patients to enter safely. This improved cleanliness and decreased cleaning expenses and water use.

Exhauster Truck Purchase

An exhauster truck was purchased to transport hospital sewage to an area in Kericho where it can be safely treated.

Radiology Suite Completion

An area to contain radiology equipment and provide radiology services to patients was constructed. Three ultrasound machines have been purchased to facilitate patient volume and exams. MRI and a digital x-ray machine have also been obtained. A computed tomography (CT) machine still needs to be obtained.
